Housewives are not so desperate for driving kicks

(25/05/2005)

Housewives drive more expensive cars with bigger engines and have more motoring convictions than other women motorists. These are the findings from research by one insurance company.

Diamond, the country's leading insurer to specialise in women motorists has studied the driving habits of over 50,000 UK housewives and compared them with other women motorists.

Amongst the data uncovered by Diamond is:

  • Housewives' cars are an average of £1,039 more expensive than other women
  • Their engine sizes are on average 257ccs larger than other women
  • They are 10% more likely to have a motoring conviction than other women
  • They drive an average of 758 miles a year less than other women

Diamond managing director, Sian Lewis, said: "Housewives make up the biggest occupational group we insure, we wanted to see if there were any differences between them and the rest of the female motoring population.

"I have to admit I was startled by some of the facts we discovered, housewives drive bigger, faster cars on the whole and are more likely to be convicted of speeding or jumping a red light. I think our research dispels the myth that housewives are boring; they certainly seem to like life in the fast lane."

Diamond also looked at the types of cars housewives prefer and found these also differed from other women. Number one on the housewives' list is the VW Golf, but number one for all other women is the Ford Fiesta.
