Wellbeing and Diamond insurance - supporting the welfare of women

(19/07/2004)

WellBeing, the reproductive health charity for women and babies, and Diamond Insurance, the specialist car insurers for female drivers, have created a special new partnership to support and promote the health and welfare of women.

To mark the new partnership, Diamond has donated an initial £25,000 that will go towards funding WellBeing's vital research into the causes of ovarian cancer, known as the 'silent killer'.

Each year over 7,000 women are diagnosed with the disease, making it the fourth most common cancer in British women. Early detection is the key to successful treatment and of those women diagnosed this year, only 30% will be alive in five years time.

WellBeing Director Shirley Farmer comments "This partnership is all about promoting the health and welfare of women. We really are delighted to have Diamond's support and not only does this enable us to raise vital funds to fight ovarian cancer but crucially it also helps us to raise awareness of this still 'hidden' disease".

Diamond Managing Director Sian Lewis adds "Diamond is proud to support the fight against this devastating cancer which affects so many women and their families. Both WellBeing and Diamond are committed to safeguarding women's lives in every way and we are happy to be involved with such an important cause".

WellBeing has been at the forefront of pioneering research into ovarian cancer - for example, through the funding of nearly £1 million, partly as an enabling grant to help set up an ovarian cancer centre and partly for research into the genetics of the disease at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. This funding has helped researchers set up the largest register in the world of families with several cases of ovarian cancer and should soon enable doctors to select, for each patient, the treatment that will best suit them. The charity continues to fund further research focusing on this disease throughout the UK.

Diamond Insurance, created by women for women, is dedicated to providing cost effective insurance for female drivers. As statistically women are safer drivers and have less serious accidents, Diamond is able to pass on these cost savings to its customers.
