The Ford Fiesta has been unveiled as the
most popular car of the Noughties for women according to women's car insurance
specialist Diamond. While for men, the Volkswagen Golf takes the crown.
Diamond looked at the cars owned by 15
million motorists from the years 2000 to 2009 and discovered the Fiesta remained the favourite car for women throughout the
decade, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa and Renault Clio. However, the Fiesta's status has been on the slide, as its
popularity halved from 2000 to 2009. In fact, the Fiesta was the biggest faller across the decade out of all the models Diamond
looked at.
During the Noughties, the top five models for women were:

Model |
Ford |
Fiesta |
Vauxhall |
Corsa |
Renault |
Clio |
Volkswagen |
Golf |
Peugeot |
206 |
The biggest risers in popularity during the decade were the Peugeot 206, followed by the Ford
Focus and Ford Ka.
For men, following the Volkswagen Golf at the top of the list for the decade, were the Ford Fiesta
and Vauxhall Astra. As with the Fiesta for women, the Golf was the most popular model across the whole of the Noughties, but
its position at the top has been eaten into by other models.
During the Noughties, the top five models for men
were:

Volkswagen |

The biggest risers in popularity were the Ford Focus, followed by the Vauxhall Corsa and
Peugeot 206.
Diamond managing director, Sian Lewis, commented, "In 2000, 1 in
8 women drove a Fiesta, by 2009, this was just 1 in 16 which shows that women are now driving a wider variety of cars. There
were around 3 million more licence holders on the road at the end of the Noughties than at the start, the majority of whom are
women. I think the trend of moving away from one particular car looks set to continue with increasing driver
numbers."
Sian continued, "One thing that is a surprise is there isn't a single 4x4 in the top 20 for women or men,
especially considering how you seem to see so many on the roads."
