New research suggests the school run is still traditionally
a mother's role.
Diamond, a direct insurer specialising in car insurance
for women, surveyed parents on how their children travel to school.
Taking children to school is still a job for mums, with
71% doing the school run compared to 29% of fathers.
87% agree that driving their children to school by car
contributes to traffic congestion problems, but only 58% were prepared
to consider another way of taking their children to schools, which might
help reduce traffic on the roads.
Of those who live less than 2 miles from school, 45% are
driven there by their parents. 33% walk, while only 4% use public transport
and just 1% travel by school bus.
Diamond also suggested alternative methods of transport
to the parents they surveyed. But 32% preferred not to consider another
way of taking their children to school. 26% said they would consider walking,
15% would consider school buses, 12% car share and 6% public transport.
Sian Lewis, managing director at Diamond, said, "Parents
seem aware of the traffic problems the school run causes, but appear less
inclined to think of a solution. Perhaps schools and local authorities
should promote school bus and public transport services, or encourage
car sharing systems to reduce the number of cars on the road at peak times."
