The best and worst on Britain's roads

Women accountants have the safest driving records, while Lawyers have the worst.

Diamond, a direct insurer specialising in car insurance for women, compiled the list from its database of 170,000 female customers. They looked at the percentage of women drivers with a motoring conviction and the percentage of women motorists who have had an accident. The occupations with the lowest percentage on both counts were declared safer.

Accountants have one of the safest driving records for any occupation. Diamond's research showed that none of the Accountants on their records have a motoring conviction and only 4% have been involved in an accident. This compares to a national average of 6.4% of motorists who have a driving conviction and 23% who have been involved in an accident.

In second place are Police Officers. 0.3% have a motoring conviction and 5% have had an accident. In third place are Secretaries followed by Nannies in fourth and Vets in fifth place.

Lawyers lead the way for the top five worst female drivers. 33% of Lawyers have been involved in an accident, and 8% have motoring convictions. Airline Stewardesses follow in second place with 32% having had an accident and 6% with motoring convictions. Charity Workers are third worst, with Teachers in fourth place and Window Dressers in fifth place.

Sian Lewis, managing director of Diamond, said, "Some of our results are not surprising. I would expect Police Officers to have a good driving record, and Nannies who probably tend to drive with children in their cars, are no doubt more likely to be careful drivers. It's interesting that Lawyers who work so closely with the law appear to fall foul of it when it comes to their driving record!"
